British Fund Announces Scholarships For Children Of WTC Victims
NEW YORK, NY -- (INTERNET WIRE) -- 04/03/2002 -- The UK-based World Trade Center Disaster Fund has announced details of scholarships for children of victims of Sept 11th terrorist attacks. Details of the scholarships, for study at a UK University or equivalent higher education institution, were announced by the Fund’s founder, Lord Levene, a former Lord Mayor of the City of London, who is in New York to publicise the scholarships.
Up to 70 scholarship awards, totalling in excess of $3million, will be available to students of any nationality whose parent or guardian was either killed or permanently disabled in the disaster. The awards are for full time study, leading to a first degree level qualification in the UK.
It is intended that the awards will cover travel, tuition fees, accommodation and living expenses for a maximum of three years leading towards a first degree. The first scholarships will be awarded for the academic year 2003/04. Expressions of interest are invited from or on behalf of any young person who might wish to attend a higher education institution in the UK, starting either in the 2003-04 academic year or at any point in the future up to and including 2020 – 21. The 70 awards will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Application forms for funding will be available by June 2002. Those interested can register on the British Council’s website in the USA, which also contains information about higher education study in the UK and entry requirements to a British university. Candidates will need to apply for funding prior to applying to the university of their choice. Eligibility for funding does NOT guarantee a university place.
The British Council are handling the administration of awards under guidelines laid down by the Trustees of the World Trade Center Disaster Fund.
THE LORD LEVENE OF PORTSOKEN KBE
Lord (Peter) Levene was appointed Vice Chairman, Deutsche Bank AG London, in April 2001, having previously held the post of Chairman, Investment Banking Europe, Deutsche Bank, since June 1999.
After graduating from the University of Manchester in 1963, he joined United Scientific Holdings plc, a company which he developed into a major international defence contractor, becoming Managing Director in 1968 and Chairman in 1981. In 1984 he became Personal Adviser to the Secretary of State for Defence. He left United Scientific Holdings in 1985 on being appointed Chief of Defence Procurement in the Ministry of Defence, a post he held until 1991. During the tenure of his post he was appointed as Chairman of the group comprising all the European National Armaments Directors.
He was Personal Adviser to the Secretary of State for the Environment from 1991 to 1992 and to the Chancellor of the Exchequer on Competition and Purchasing in 1992. He also served as Personal Adviser to the President of the Board of Trade from 1992 to 1995, as Deputy Chairman and Managing Director of Wasserstein Perella & Co Ltd from 1991 to 1995, as Chairman of the Docklands Light Railway from 1991 to 1994, as Chairman and Chief Executive of Canary Wharf Ltd from 1993 to 1996, as the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Efficiency and Effectiveness from 1992 to 1997, as Senior Adviser to Morgan Stanley & Co Ltd from 1996-98 and as Chairman of Bankers Trust International from 1998-99.
He was appointed a non-executive Director of Haymarket Group Ltd in 1997, and Chairman of International Financial Services London (formerly British Invisibles) in 2000. In 2001 he was appointed Chairman of General Dynamics (UK) Limited and also a non-executive Director of J Sainsbury plc.
Lord Levene is an Alderman and Magistrate in the City of London and served as Sheriff from 1995-96. He served as Lord Mayor of London for the year 1998-99. He received a knighthood in 1989 and became a life Peer in July 1997. He is aged 60 and is married with two sons and a daughter.
