New Study Reveals A Balance Of Nutrients Needed To Promote Bone HealthTufts University Researchers Find Protein, Calcium And Vitamin D Are The Ideal Bone-Building Combination CHICAGO, IL -- (INTERNET WIRE) -- 03/21/2002 -- Today, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition released a new study suggesting that calcium alone may not be enough to protect against osteoporosis. While calcium plays a critical role in helping to reduce the rate of bone loss due to aging, the study finds that for bones to be the strongest, a balance of nutrients that includes calcium, protein and vitamin D is needed. The study also reports that adequate calcium intake, and increased protein consumption, leads to improvements in bone density and reduces the risk of bone fracture. Osteoporosis remains a significant health problem…affecting more than 28 million Americans. Currently nine out of ten women fail to get the calcium they need. To reap the bone-building benefits of protein, it’s critical to meet calcium recommendations-the level found in three eight-ounce glasses of milk.
